Odor Removal in University Area, Charlotte – 2018 Chevrolet Malibu
The Problem
A college student near UNC Charlotte was selling their 2018 Chevrolet Malibu but couldn't get a fair offer because of a persistent sour milk smell that buyers noticed immediately. A gallon of milk had leaked in the trunk months earlier and soaked through the carpet into the spare tire well. Despite scrubbing the visible stain, the odor had penetrated the carpet backing and foam padding underneath. On warm days, the smell intensified to the point where no one could sit in the car comfortably. The rest of the interior wasn't much better. Years of college life had left the cloth seats smelling like a mix of gym clothes and fast food. The floor mats were stained and worn thin, and the headliner had absorbed general cabin odors over time. The student needed odor removal for the car interior before listing it again, and air fresheners were only making the combination worse.
Our Process
- Trunk carpet removal to access the source of the milk spill underneath
- Spare tire well cleaning and disinfecting where liquid had pooled
- Carpet backing and foam pad treatment with enzymatic bio-cleaner
- Full interior hot water extraction on all cloth seats, carpets, and floor mats
- Headliner light steam treatment to release absorbed odors
- HVAC system antibacterial fogger to clear duct-carried smells
- Sealed-cabin ozone generator treatment for 3 hours
- Cabin air filter replacement
- Post-treatment ventilation and odor verification
The Results
The sour milk smell was completely eliminated after treating the source under the trunk carpet. The enzymatic cleaner broke down the organic material that had been feeding the odor for months, and the ozone session neutralized everything that remained in the fabric and ventilation system. The cloth seats and headliner were fresh after extraction, and the cabin air filter swap meant clean air was circulating through the system. The student listed the car the following weekend and received multiple offers — none of the buyers mentioned any smell. In Charlotte's warm climate, untreated organic spills only get worse over time, which is why reaching the source material was critical to a lasting fix.
